Boating Safety Guide
Boating accidents are a serious matter. Carelessness on your part can result in serious long-term injuries or even death. That is why the experts at Captain Kirk’s Marine have created this guide to boating safety.
Know the Laws
As a boat owner, it’s your responsibility to know and follow the relevant local and state boating laws. Failing to follow these rules will result in serious consequences, whether legal wise or safety wise. If you’re unsure about which laws apply, your local authorities should be able to help.
Operate With Care
It’s important that you share the water. Give swimmers and other boaters plenty of space at all times. Signal other boaters if necessary, and stay out of designated swimming zones. There should be plenty of signs, markers, and buoys marking out where it is and where it isn’t safe to operate your vessel. It’s also important that whoever is operating the boat be fully sober. Drugs and alcohol use can make you more likely to engage in risky behavior, as well as reduce your reaction time, a truly dangerous combination.
Maintain Your Boat
If the first half of boat safety is acting responsibly, the other half is keeping your boat well maintained. Basic maintenance tasks like keeping the deck clean, recharging the battery, and changing the oil might not seem like a big deal, but they can go a long way towards ensuring that your vessel doesn’t suffer any unexpected mechanical failures or accidents. The better and more efficiently your boat runs, the less your chances of suffering an accident.
